Job Description
In alignment with the mission of the YMCA, the Sports Director is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, expansion and evaluation of youth and adult sport programs. The principalobjective will be to develop meaningful programs and services to fulfill the YMCA’s mission. Your leadership will be crucial in promoting physical activity, skill development, values, and teamwork among participants. You will be responsible for managing sports facilities, coordinating events, and ensuring the overall success and growth of our sports programs. Other responsibilities include creating and managing the budget and allocating funds responsibly, assisting in fulfilling fundraising goals and efforts, and effectivelycommunicating with other department heads within the organization. The Sports Director reports to the Branch Operations Director.
Qualifications
- B.S. or equivalent in Physical Education, Community Recreation or related discipline/experience preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years supervisory recreational experience.
- Proven results with experience in building and implementing sport programming.
- Proficiency in budget management, financial planning, and fundraising strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of sports programs.
- Committing to support and further our anti-racist work as an organization. Actively works to continue to recruit and hire diverse staff and volunteers.
- Experience with coaching sports to youth groups of 6-25 individuals.
- Is motivating, positive and enthusiastic.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Well-developed communication skills are essential, including verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational abilities to manage multiple programs, events, and administrative tasks efficiently.
- Proactive when tackling challenging situations, addressing them quickly and professionally to deliver great results for both members and the Sports team.
- Dynamic personality with a skill set that can educate and motivate the sports staff to be passionate about their job and the WSYMCA.
- YMCA Team Leader or working toward same.
- Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
- An understanding of the needs of the communities served by the West Suburban YMCA.
- Represent the West Suburban YMCA in a positive manner.
Essential Functions
- Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Expands youth and adult sports programing within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
- Responsible for all Strategic Planning and Operations within the Sports Department:
- Customer Service and Human relations skills with general public, membership and staff
- Fiscal Management: Overseeing sports department operating budget, purchasing equipment, program supplies
- Leadership: Supervise and Schedule of employees including: Assistant Sports Directors, Sports Coordinators, Facility Monitors, Instructors, Program Assistants, Referees, Volunteers, Event Coordinators, Seasonal Staff, Counselors, Contracted Personnel
- Recruitment, interviewing, hiring, orientation compliance, training & supervision of staff, interns and volunteers
- Responsible for administering payroll, ensuring all hours are added in timely manner.
- Active support of our DEIB statement and putting into practice our commitment to equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion. Continue to research, create, recommend and implement strategies to support diversity goals of the organization.
- Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Onboards and develops them for success.Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Models’ relationship-building skills and listening skills in all interactions.
- Organization: Coordinating all aspects of Youth & Adult Sport Programming. Responsible for trophy day, training and orientation of coaches and officials, scheduling for all sports programs.
- Marketing: Maintenance of promotional tools; program guide, web maintenance and member and camper database.
- Facilities Management: planning, scheduling and managing sports and programs.
- Supervise gymnasium, indoor track, and New Balance Track and Field facilities including all staff and program participants
- Maintain and ensure equipment and facility safety
- Create and implement comprehensive facilities schedules
- Organization of sports equipment and keeping accurate inventory.
- Program Development: create and implement comprehensive Sports curriculum. Keeps up with current trends and routinely expands programming and offerings.
- Direct Service in Programs: Leads and assists where needed in all sport programs and leagues; officiating games, coaching teams, instructing and assisting with sport program classes, and private lessons.
- Advance mission through the negotiation of contracts, development and implementation of new and existing programs.
- Ensure that all sports programs and facilities comply with safety regulations, risk management protocols, and relevant laws.
- Oversee monthly staff training, ensuring consistent safety/emergency response training is reviewed, understood, and performed. Maintain complete familiarity of all risk management procedures and policies for the organization. Keeps accurate and up to date drill logs.
- Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported involving self, participants, guests, and other employees. Maintains a safe work environment, free of clutter, debris and hazardous conditions and ensures cleanliness of facility.
- Coordinate and participate in special events and activities related to membership growth and/or retention to enhance the member experience and volunteer opportunities.
- Motivates and energizes the sports staff to be Cause-driven Leaders. Leads by example. Organizes trainings including but not limited to sales, customer service, Listen First, Cause-Driven Leader, and problem-solving/conflict resolution.
- Responsible for monitoring and responding to Member Comments and Suggestions regarding the sports department.
- Works closely with other Directors and Senior leadership on constant awareness with staff, child and parents of the importance of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention.
- Works to ensure that college interns and volunteers are onboarded correctly, feel valued and appreciated. Oversees Volunteer Matters platform and ensures all onboarding compliance.
