About the Role

The Job Seeker Data Science group is excited to hire a Data Science Manager to help lead our Ranking and Personalization Science team in North America. This is a great opportunity for a Manager to guide the work of a new and rapidly growing team of 4-5 Data and Product Scientists in a highly visible and impactful business area. As a Data Science Manager, you will help hire and oversee junior scientists and a team tech lead, and coordinate with your fellow Ranking Science tech leads and managers. You’ll work with leaders across the business to develop Indeed’s innovative new personalization engine to recommend content to job seekers on Indeed’s homepage (and beyond!).

About the Team

The Ranking team at Indeed is responsible for determining the order of the jobs that we show on a search engine result page (SERP). It is a key lever in how we connect job seekers with employers, and over 220 million unique job seekers visit Indeed every month to find their next job. Currently, the broader Ranking Science team consists of a Data Science Manager, two Staff Data Scientists, and two Product Scientists. We expect the broader Ranking team to double this year.

The Ranking team consists of several sub-teams - this role will be part of what’s called the “Relevant Jobs Platform”, a new recommendation system that we’re building to help surface relevant content to job seekers. While the team is currently focused on Indeed’s homepage, longer term we anticipate the platform supporting other high-profile business areas. Currently, the team has one dedicated Scientist - we anticipate that by the end of the year, the team will have nearly ten scientists from new graduates to principal data scientists. Who You Are

Your Responsibilities as a Data Science Manager on Search Ranking and Personalization

Coach Data Scientists on the Ranking and Personalization team to improve their performance, advise them on their career direction, and develop their skills
Work independently to understand, prioritize, and plan the team’s work items
Ensure delivery of data science solutions, set expectations for what can be done and by when, and prioritize incoming projects
Improve existing Agile, ML, and A/B testing processes and develop new ones
Scope projects, gather and improve on requirements, and delegate work effectively
Collaborate with and provide project direction and feedback to cross-functional peers, including Product Managers, Software Engineers
Remove roadblocks and give individual contributors autonomy and ownership
Brainstorm with teammates about practical experimental design, navigating production codebases, and model development

Who you are

Ph.D. or M.S. in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent
Significant prior success as a Data Science or Machine Learning Engineering Manager (3+ direct reports) working on challenging problems at scale
5+ years of industry experience, with expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling
Strong ability to code (Python, Java, Go, or C++) and experience with SQL Databases like Presto, and data processing frameworks like Spark
Have full stack experience in data collection, aggregation, analysis, visualization, productionization, and monitoring
Strong ability to coach Data Scientists, helping them improve their skills and grow their careers

Salary Range Disclaimer

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include quarterly bonuses, Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), an open Paid Time Off policy, and many region-specific benefits.

Salary Range Transparency

US Remote 149,000 - 217,000 USD per year

Seattle 179,000 - 260,000 USD per year

NYC Metro Area 174,000 - 252,000 USD per year

SF Bay Area 187,000 - 270,000 USD per year
