WOU seeks its first Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support its campus—students, faculty, employees, programs and disciplines—in its commitment toward ever-greater diversity, equity and inclusion. Higher education in the United States is changing. WOU is looking for an energetic, driven and thoughtful individual to help build the university’s capacity to meet the challenges and opportunities that such change promises.

The function of the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is critical to the university’s future success as WOU completes its effort to become a recognized Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a marketplace that relies on the trading of diverse ideas, respect for difference and the harmony of broad acceptance.

The mission of the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office is to engage campus partners in developing, implementing and administering a wide range of programs reflective of the priorities and guidelines provided by the WOU Board of Trustees’ Statement on Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Accessibility and the approved Diversity Action Plan. Campus partners such as the University Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (UDIAC), Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Associated Students of Western Oregon University (ASWOU), the General Education Committee, Disability Services, WOU Safe Zone, the University Cultural Competence Advisory Committee (UCCAC), and others should be welcomed into ongoing conversation with the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion about how best to expand the inclusivity of campus programs, curricular design and the campus culture at WOU.

The Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a cabinet-level position reporting directly to the University President, who may set objectives for the DEI office consistent with the University’s Diversity Action Plan, cultural competence standards, and feedback from the student and employee community.

Department / Job Summary:

Western Oregon University is a mid-size comprehensive university located in the heart of Monmouth and very close to its sister city, Independence. From its historical buildings to its tree-lined streets, WOU is one of the oldest and safest universities in Oregon. Set in the scenic Mid-Willamette Valley, it offers a peaceful pastoral setting among rolling hills and prime agricultural land. The main campus is 12 miles west of Salem, the state’s capital and home to WOU’s satellite campus. Monmouth is 50 miles away from the Oregon Coast to the west and a few hours’ drive from the towering Cascade Mountains to the east. It is an excellent place to live, raise a family and work at a thriving university.

WOU is only 60 miles from Portland, which has an international airport and Portland State University, the state’s urban campus. Just 20 miles away is Corvallis, home to Oregon State University, the state’s land grant campus. Eugene and University of Oregon—the state’s AAU campus—is about 60 miles south. Thus, WOU is located in the heart of a very rich and diverse academic community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree AND
  • Five years of increasing levels of experience involving the promotion and administration of DEI efforts in a higher education, or other similarly complex organization or nonprofit, setting. The specific experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree, Doctorate, J.D. or other related degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of increasing experience in: advocacy, promotion, and administration of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in a higher education or other similarly complex organization or nonprofit setting
  • Examples of how one could meet these requirements could be: a bachelor's degree and six years of relevant experience; a Master’s degree and four years of relevant experience; or, doctorate/terminal degree and two years of relevant experience.
  • A background that provides evidence of navigating barriers similar to those encountered by historically exploited and resilient populations
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
