Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD) is a leader in integrated research on the coupled human and physical dimensions of global change, remote sensing, and Geospatial Information Science. The Department seeks a highly self-motivated Professional Track Faculty Specialist position to serve as a Project Coordinator. Salary and benefits are highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. A bachelor’s degree in geography, project management, computer science, or a related field is required. The primary responsibility of this position is to support NASA Harvest Program (www.nasaharvest.org). NASA Harvest is NASA’s food security and agriculture program, led by a Hub within the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland. In particular, the Project Coordinator will support the development of the NASA Harvest Portal, a geospatial content management system providing access to data and analysis tools in partnership with international agencies/organizations involved with food security and agricultural monitoring.

As Project Coordinator, you will be coordinating code sprints across multiple projects, scheduling regular check-in meetings for the development team, liaising between projects (and understanding the roles and responsibilities associated with each), performing quality control checks on systems and results, and developing written materials for documentation, training, and funding proposals.

Minimum Qualifications: This is an entry-level or junior-level position.

BA or BS is required.

Strong candidates will:

• Have a background in project management for software/applications development

• Be capable of coordinating activities for several simultaneous projects across a small team of developers

• Be capable of working within a dynamic research team with individuals from various backgrounds

• Exhibit high attention to detail

• Be able to quickly organize around short deadlines

• Have strong writing skills to be able to contribute to developing system documentation and training materials

• Have experience with software development and collaboration tools like the Atlassian suite (Jira, BitBucket, Confluence, etc.) or similar is required

Preferences: Additionally, comfort with GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS) and programming using Python, Javascript, and/or SQL are preferred skills.
